Turks Unveil 17% More Fuel-Efficient Engine Design without Direct Injection

As reported in GreenCarCongress this morning (http://www.greencarcongress.com/2008/12/stratified-char.html), a team of researchers from Istanbul Technical University has unveiled a new 1.6-liter engine that offers a 17% reduction in fuel consumption without direct injection of fuels, concomitant with a 7% increase in power, as compared to a conventional 1.6-liter port-injected engine.

The design can be implemented, according to the developers, on current production engines without significant modification.

Interestingly, the engine is based on an original proposal by a team from Azerbaijan Technical University, Warsaw Technical University and Middle East Technical University.  A paper describing the new engine is to be published by the American Chemical Society’s Energy & Fuels journal in the December issue, which was not available online today, but should be soon.  http://pubs.acs.org/journal/enfuem
