Solar-Powered Hangar 25 takes off

The aviation industry isn’t typically known for its environmental sensitivity, but Hangar 25 at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, CA could begin to change that perception. A developer and officials at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, CA today unveiled what the LA Times suggests is the world’s greenest aviation facility, the $17 million completely solar-powered Hangar 25 with rooftop photovoltaic panels providing all the juice. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-greenbuild9-2008dec09,0,7496425.story. There’s enough electricity to not only operate the 60,000-square-foot facility’s lights, but to recharge electric equipment like tow vehicles and fork lifts and power the complete electrical system of a Boeing 757 while it’s parked inside the hangar being serviced. According to the Times, the founder of the hangar’s builder, Shangri-La Construction, is movie mogul and real estate heir Steve Bing.
